TASK

For the final project, we were required to create a 1 minute video with VFX. The project consisted of two members (I partnered up with Cindy Noverin (0376409)), and we had to develop a short story video. Before creating the video, we were also required to submit a proposal that included our idea for the video, VFX references, and a storyboard.

Proposal

Theme(Tarot): The Hanged Man

Synopsis: After a heated argument with her best friend Aquela, Cindy lets their frustration slip, “You’re the reason everything falls apart”, before walking away in anger. Hurt, Aquela storms off. Suddenly, time begins to rewind. Cindy, stunned, watches everything move in reverse until a mysterious tarot card, The Hanged Man, falls from the sky. Cindy grasps the card, she’s given a chance to witness the argument again from a new perspective. Seeing the pain in Aquela’s eyes and her own harsh expression, Cindy realizes her mistakes. When time resumes its normal flow, Cindy runs to stop Aquela, apologizes sincerely.

Process

We recorded the video at Taylor's University. After filming, we decided to split the tasks between us. I was mainly responsible for the VFX in this video. First, I created a separate composition for the card (credit: https://id.pinterest.com/pin/450782243972949012/).

In After Effects, I compiled all the video clips that required VFX to make the editing process easier. After compiling the clips, I added the card into the video and began planning the visual effects.

Since Cindy and I wanted the cards to appear as if they were falling before she grabbed one, I applied position effects to all the cards that would appear in the video.

After adjusting the position, I referred to https://youtu.be/kFxBR2g9fR0?si=s41euInq9R7lJhnG and https://youtu.be/lazj6wFnLkw?si=ZqpRaWaciULS23QK to make the falling card effect more convincing. I used the CC Cylinder effect to make the fall look more realistic and experimented with the settings to achieve the desired result. However, using CC Cylinder made the card appear too cylindrical, so I added the Grow Bounds effect to make it look a bit flatter, more believable as an actual card.

Since the card blended in with the background, I decided to add a glow effect to make it stand out. I also adjusted the curves and brightness & contrast to further enhance the glow. After that, I added a drop shadow to make it more believable that a card was falling into Cindy's hand.

For the next VFX, we wanted to create a 'soul out of body' effect. We recorded two videos to achieve this. For the one I planned to use for the 'soul' effect, I used the Roto Brush to remove the background and isolate Cindy in the video.

After using the Roto Brush, I aligned the video and lowered the opacity to 70% to make the 'soul out of body' effect more believable.

Lastly, I moved to Premiere Pro and added the beginning and ending of the video we had. Then, I inserted the VFX segment I created in After Effects into the middle and sent it to Cindy for further adjustments.

FEEDBACK

Week 11

Mr. Martin said that our story was too jumbled and lacked context. He mentioned that our VFX ideas were good, but without reading the summary, it was hard to understand the storyline. He gave us feedback on the correct order of the video and advised us to fill in the gaps to ensure the context is clear for the audience.
