FINAL PROJECT 2
Prototype:
Website Recreation of GPIB Maranatha Surabaya
GPIB Maranatha Surabaya is an old church that is still active today. Most of its members are elderly, but there are also some adults and children. There is no available data explaining the exact age demographics. However, I used to attend this church for over five years, and I kept that experience in mind when redesigning the website.
Key Features:
As mentioned earlier, since many of the church members are elderly, I focused on making the website easy for them to use. I chose a very simple layout to avoid confusion and to ensure easy navigation. To reduce eye strain, I used a large font size and a muted color palette. Since I also want adults, teenagers, and visitors to enjoy using the site, I aimed to give it a modern appearance. However, I avoided using complex transitions to make the site more accessible for elderly users.
Decisions Made During Development:
I made several key decisions while developing this prototype. First, I wanted users to avoid excessive scrolling. I kept the content compact because I worried that long sections might tire them out or discourage them from reading. For example, in the “History” page, I used flashcards arranged in a timeline. This avoids long paragraphs and makes the content more interesting and interactive. I didn’t reduce or remove any text from the original history section, out of respect for it, but presenting it in a timeline made it more engaging.
Second, the original website had many separate navigation items that I felt could be merged. I did this in my “Visual Bulletin” page, which now includes the Church Bulletin, Visual Bulletin, and Greetings sections.
Initially, I wanted to include both a Gallery and YouTube videos in the Media page. However, the Gallery link was broken. While it still worked during the wireframing stage, it stopped functioning when I began prototyping. So, I replaced the Gallery with YouTube videos.
Lastly, I removed the login feature from the original website. I made this decision with the elderly in mind, as I believe many of them may not understand its purpose. Also, joining the church’s family list is a complicated process, so having a login button wouldn’t make much difference.
How the Prototype Addresses the Objectives:
The main goal of this redesign was to improve the website in terms of layout, accessibility, visual consistency, and overall alignment with the church’s identity. At a glance, the prototype meets these objectives. The layout and navigation are simple, the visual consistency is improved, and the design better reflects the church’s character. I also reduced the number of navigation items to make browsing easier. The interactive history page encourages engagement without overwhelming the reader. Overall, the prototype successfully fulfills the goals of the redesign.
FEEDBACK
Week 9
Mr. Shamsul said that my layout is already good. However, some of the text is too big and needs to be reduced. He also mentioned that my hover effect is too complicated for me to code later, so I need to simplify it.
