    REFLECTION

    Experience

Throughout this assignment, I found this module to be really difficult and draining. The main reasons are the tight deadlines and the intensity of each task. Although Mr. Vinod had already warned us at the beginning of the semester, it was still very challenging to complete everything within the given time. Task 3, in particular, was the hardest because there were so many things to be done quickly, finding an idea for the font, sketching, digitizing, and making sure the line weights were balanced.

This whole experience made me admire font designers even more. Typography is something I see every day, but I never realized how much thought and time goes into creating a single typeface, especially when people often take it for granted. Now that I’ve gone through the process myself, I think I’d feel a little frustrated if others didn’t acknowledge the effort I put into it.

That said, doing the sidebearings and kerning was the most time-consuming part of the journey. It taught me how to be more patient, as there were just so many details to adjust and refine.

    Observation

While working on this task, I observed a lot about my classmates, especially during Task 2, when almost everyone’s idea was rejected (lol). I felt relieved knowing I wasn’t going through it alone. The atmosphere in class became more relaxed and fun, since everyone was just joking around after facing the same struggles.

Another thing I noticed is how a small icon or visual element can heavily influence how people perceive a brand. For example, I included a music note in my logo just because I enjoy music, but it made people assume my brand had something to do with a music store or music school. This made me realize how important it is to be intentional about every element in a logo, as it leaves a strong impression.

I also learned that unique branding leaves a longer-lasting impact. Shoe brands don’t need to literally show shoes in their logos, what matters more is a distinctive identity that helps the brand grow and expand beyond a specific category. That was something I only came to understand after going through Task 2.

    Findings

This module has taught me to be more patient and persistent with my assignments. As I mentioned in my experience, kerning and sidebearing taught me the importance of small adjustments and long-term focus.

I also learned how to use FontForge and relearned how to use FontLab 8. I learned how to create my own wordmark in my own style and animate it too.

Most importantly, through all the assignments, I feel like I’ve grown, not just as a designer, but as a person. I’m now able to apply what I’ve learned to other areas of my work, and that feels really rewarding.
