Experience
When I first found out I’d be studying typography, I didn't have much interest in or knowledge of typography at the time, so I was afraid I wouldn't understand it well. But, the journey has been enjoyable. It's fascinating to discover that something you originally believe to be simple actually needs deep understanding.
It was fascinating to me how something so simple could be complex because typography has a long history and many rules to follow. Since I didn't think it was my area of expertise, I was worried that I wouldn't do well. To be honest I still get that feeling, but I've loved every assignments. This experience has given me a deeper appreciation for design, especially typography. It’s made me realize that every piece of text I see is created with so much care and thought.
Observation
This semester, I’ve learned so much just by observing. I love how each task has made me notice details I used to overlook. The feedback I received really helped me understand things better. Sometimes, I’d compare my mistakes to others and wonder why something that was an error for me could actually work as a strength for them.
After completing each task, I’ve gained a new appreciation for typography. Whenever I see typography posters, I can’t help but admire how talented and hardworking the creators are because I know how challenging it is to make something like that. I’ve also picked up a new habit, I find myself looking at signs outside and wondering why the creator chose that particular typeface or what they wanted viewers to feel and understand. It’s something I do without even thinking, but it’s actually a lot of fun
Findings
I discovered that typography is far from simple. There’s a deep thought process and a lot of care that has gone into it since the early days. But at its core, the goal has always been the same, to communicate. I’ve learned that good typography isn’t just about how it looks but how effectively it communicates. Every rule exists to ensure that typographers can deliver their message clearly, which is something I often overlooked before.
Now that I’ve learned the basic concepts, I want to apply this understanding to my future designs. Clarity is the biggest lesson I’ve taken away. When designing, I’ve learned to put myself in the viewer’s POV to ensure I’m not just completing assignments, but creating work that people can understand and connect with.
On top of that, I’ve learned to use three new applications. Getting familiar with them and using them to bring my ideas to life has been so much fun. Following tutorials and applying what I’ve learned has been a rewarding experience.
In the end, this assignment has taught me so much, especially how to appreciate design on a deeper level.
