Title: Signal to Noise - Cover Reimagined

Software: Ibis Paint X and Adobe Photoshop

Rationale

Fig. 3.1 and 3.2 are my interpretation of Signal to Noise by Neil Gaiman. As I mentioned before, I wanted to depict the filmmaker’s hopeful dream being destroyed as he runs out of time. To convey this, I used a burned film strip leading to a broken clock. Additionally, I scattered the clock’s numbers to enhance the sense of chaos.

I’m also a fan of the original cover artist, Dave McKean. I love how he incorporates drawing, painting, photography, collage, found objects, and textures in his work. To learn from his style, I combined my drawing with photography and textures.

For the composition, I applied the Principle of Continuity to guide the viewer’s eye toward the clock, which serves as the focal point. To emphasize it, I created contrast by adding a glow around it and placing it against a dark background. Furthermore, I balanced the composition by adding words and images while positioning the text below the focal point to prevent the left side from feeling too heavy. Lastly, I incorporated noise textures to enhance the dramatic, dream-like atmosphere.

REFLECTION

Throughout this module, I learned how to analyze and effectively use design principles in my artwork. First, I analyze my favorite artists' thought processes when they used design principles to convey messages in their artworks. By doing that, I understand how to apply it to my artwork. Secondly, I got to see my improvement in art just by using design principles correctly.

While doing the assignments, I enjoyed doing Task 1 and Task 3 the most. First, it is fun to analyze all the arts, and I stumbled upon many great artists when I did my research. Secondly, It is satisfying for me to see my improvement from sketch to final design. I'm happy that this task allowed me to give myself a chance to explore my potential more.

Unfortunately, I found Task 2 pretty challenging. The artwork that I chose is from one of my favorite artists, and it happens to be a cover for a graphic novel. When I did the sketches, I felt like I couldn't make something as powerful as my favorite artist, and I was afraid my interpretation would be wrong, and I would ruin the message. However, my friends told me that I needed to be confident. Thanks to their encouragement, I managed to finish my sketches.

While working on this module, I realized that I never gave myself a chance to explore. I was wondering for 4 days when I needed to develop my artwork before finishing. What should I do with the sketch? I feel like it is good enough and I can proceed with the final design. Little did I know that when I focused on the development, I was able to add more details to my artwork with something I never thought of before.

Through this module, I also realized that although I knew about design principles, I didn’t fully understand them. I always heard about their importance and acknowledged it, but I never put much thought into applying them properly. Thanks to this assignment, I was finally able to utilize them effectively. However, I still struggle with my old habits of self-doubt, forgetfulness, and clumsiness. I hope that one day, I can manage this.

After doing this assignment, I wish to be a better version of myself and utilize this knowledge for my future projects.
